Market conditions are gradually improving, although congestion at European and UK ports continues to cause unreliable arrival times, with the Port of Felixstowe particularly impacted.
The market is stabilising in several regions, with easing of capacity pressures and reduced congestion at major Chinese ports beginning to filter through to Southeast Asian hub ports. Although these ports remain congested, conditions are slowly improving.
Golden Week, from 1st-7th October, will see offices and factories closed in China, though ports will remain operational, and customs services will work with reduced staff and limited hours. Carriers have announced blank sailings in the coming weeks to align capacity with reduced demand during this period.
Current Shipping Challenges
Congestion at European Ports and Felixstowe: Delays in vessel arrivals from Asia are leading to congestion at European ports, causing simultaneous arrivals, berthing issues, and unpredictable arrival times. Felixstowe remains particularly unreliable, with varying waiting periods.
Southeast Asia Congestion: While improving, major Southeast Asian hub ports like Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, and Yangon continue to experience congestion, disrupting feeder vessel schedules and shipping rotations.
US Port Strike Risk: Negotiations regarding the potential strike at US East Coast ports are ongoing, with a decision expected early next week. The strike, if it proceeds on 1st October 2024, could lead to additional carrier charges and necessitate rerouting to West Coast ports, potentially delaying vessel returns to Asia and disrupting supply chains. The knock-on effects, though still uncertain, remain a risk in the coming months.
Unpredictable Arrival Times
Inconsistent shipping schedules and extended transit times are continuing to create uncertainty around arrival times. These disruptions are likely to persist through Golden Week and into October. We will keep customers updated on any further developments.
