Booking volumes are rising as factories return to full production post Chinese New Year. Labour strikes in Rotterdam and Bangladesh are causing port disruptions, leading to delays for some shipments.
Volumes Rise Following Chinese New Year
With factories in China now back in full production, booking volumes have increased as goods are ready to ship. In response to rising demand and the implementation of multiple blank sailings throughout February and March to balance supply and demand, carriers have announced General Rate Increases (GRIs) effective from March 1st. With capacity continually being withdrawn from the market, we are experiencing potential challenges with schedules changing at the last minute.
Rotterdam Strikes Disrupt Schedules
Port worker strikes at the Delta II Terminal in Rotterdam are causing vessel delays and affecting cargo destined for Rotterdam, as well as transhipment cargo into the UK. The strikes stem from ongoing disputes over severance pay and financial guarantees in a new labour agreement. Negotiations are ongoing and could change at any moment. With the impact on port operations and schedules still uncertain, we are monitoring developments closely.
Bangladesh Strikes Causes Port Congestion
Truck driver strikes at Chittagong Port have led to significant congestion, with up to 20 vessels waiting and delays extending up to 5-7 days. The strikes were triggered by a clash between truck drivers and security personnel following a road accident. Truck drivers have been barricading entry points, hindering cargo movement. Despite the strike being called off by unions, many truckers have not complied and continue to block the port, causing further disruption to cargo movement.
Shipping Alliances Schedules Stabilise
The transition to new alliance schedules is now largely in place, following a period of adjustment as carriers shifted from old routes to new ones. From March 1st, advertised schedules will be fully aligned with the new alliance structures, providing more stability, improved schedule reliability and clearer information regarding discharge ports, benefiting overall supply chain planning.
