Demand rises as factories return to full production, while blank sailings continue to restrict capacity. Labour strikes in Rotterdam and Bangladesh continue to cause delays for some shipments.
Rising Demand as Factories Resume Full Production
With Chinese New Year now behind us, factories in China have returned to full production, driving a steady increase in demand as more goods are ready to ship. Carriers will continue to implement multiple blank sailings throughout March to manage supply and demand. With capacity being withdrawn from the market ongoing, we are experiencing potential challenges with schedules changing at the last minute.
Rotterdam Strikes Cause Some Delays
Port worker strikes at the Delta II Terminal in Rotterdam are still causing some vessel delays. The strikes, driven by disputes over severance pay and financial guarantees in a new labour agreement, are ongoing, and further developments remain possible.
Bangladesh Strikes Lead to Ongoing Port Congestion
Although the recent truck driver strikes at Chittagong Port have now been called off by unions, the disruption has left a backlog, resulting in ongoing port congestion. Vessels are still waiting, with berthing delays of up to five days, as operations work to clear the congestion and restore normal cargo movement.
Introduction of New Alliance Schedules
The transition to new alliance schedules is now well underway, with carriers implementing updated routes. While some gaps and delays remain, the shift has been smoother than expected, with fewer teething issues than initially anticipated. From March 1st, advertised schedules will be in full effect, offering greater stability and improved arrival time reliability – allowing for more accurate and efficient supply chain management.
