Market conditions are showing signs of gradual improvement; however, challenges remain in Europe and the UK, where late arrivals are creating vessel bunching and congestion at ports.

With the market stabilising in several regions, the early peak season in China continues to taper off, easing pressure on capacity and congestion at major Chinese ports. These improvements are starting to reach Southeast Asian hub ports, which, although still congested, are seeing better conditions than in recent weeks. Bangladesh, which faced delays due to civil unrest and flooding, has now cleared the majority of its backlog.

Current Shipping Challenges

Adverse Weather Around Africa: The consistent bad weather that has affected ships rerouting to avoid the Red Sea is expected to ease as spring approaches, however isolated pockets of poor weather are likely to persist in the coming weeks.

Congestion at European Ports and Felixstowe: Delays in departures from Asia continue to cause multiple vessels to arrive simultaneously at European ports, creating long queues for berths and unreliable arrival times. Felixstowe remains particularly unpredictable, with varying waiting periods.

Southeast Asia Congestion: Major Southeast Asian hub ports, including Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, and Yangon, continue to face congestion, which is disrupting feeder vessel schedules and shipping rotations.

US Port Strike Risk: A potential strike at all US East Coast ports is expected around 1st October 2024, with the possibility of affecting Gulf Coast ports as well. If the strike proceeds, rerouting cargo to alternative West Coast ports may become necessary, which could delay vessels returning to Asia and disrupt supply chains. While the strike is not yet confirmed, the potential knock-on effect is a risk for the coming months.

Golden Week Approaching

Chinese ports are now operating efficiently, with only occasional delays. Service levels continue to improve ahead of the Golden Week holiday, running from 1st-7th October. During this period, offices and factories in China will be closed, though ports will operate as usual. However, customs services will work with reduced staff and limited hours.

Unpredictable Arrival Times

Inconsistent shipping schedules and extended transit times are continuing to make arrival times uncertain. These disruptions are likely to persist through Golden Week and into October. We will keep customers updated on any further developments.
